by Cathy DeBuono

Last week Jill and I gathered with thousands of other LGBT people in West Hollywood park to celebrate the announcement of the repeal of Prop 8.

There was a virtual sea of couples, families and friends there to hear from the brave plaintiffs who stepped up for the good of all of us and sued the state of California… and won.

Ted Olson and David Boies were there too, (the attorneys who took on the fight). As we stood in the crowd and listened, many were moved to tears, empowered by the progress and hopeful for our families and the future.

After it was over my girlfriend and I began to walk home and as we passed by The Abbey (the famous gay bar just next door to the park) there were various mainstream media crews there… cameras trained on the hot, oiled up, half naked cowboy outside the bar. Apparently it was his opinion the press found important to capture, it was he they chose to represent us to their viewers.

Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the outrageous and spectacle worthy members of any community just as much as the next guy. I love them in fact – they are the spice of life after all. But right now, I am sick of them being our representation in the mainstream world. How can ignorant, sheltered, removed members of the mainstream community ever get to know who we are as gay people if all they see are images they cannot relate to.

Most people outside of places where Gay and Lesbians have established a presence have no idea that we are people just like them. Thanks to mainstream media’s coverage of our LGBT news, those people (the majority of the WORLD in fact) think that gay or lesbian means bearded men in wedding dresses, naked men in chaps with whips, drag queens with glow in the dark breasts and half naked oily guys in cowboy hats…

In the last 2 years I have been a part of rallies in various cities around this country and I have seen seas of thousands of people with no particular outrageous style, fighting for the right to live their lives as equals. I have seen lesbian couples pushing strollers and gay couples in polo shirts and a simple pair of jeans toting their three little ones after a long day at the office…. just like everyone else. Yet, at every location, what I see is the media aiming their cameras and interest at the most sensationalistic and controversial characters they can find.

I understand that business is business. Media outlets want to sell papers, magazines, gain viewers, and gather clicks – and sensationalism sells. But news outlets need to be more responsible than this. This is a community of people fighting for the basic rights of their lives and the mainstream media is not helping. Not only are they not helping – they are selfishly using us to sell their product at our expense… yes, I said at our expense. They have a tremendous amount of power in shaping the world’s social awareness. And time and time again I have seen them sell that out in order to be more outrageous than the next guy.

A few days ago I was moved to tweet my thoughts after seeing what the CNN news reel loop was as we all waited for Judge Walker’s decision to come down about whether the stay on his repeal of Prop 8 would stand or be lifted. It was a member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, half naked, full faced make-up and donning his flying nun habit – and I had had it. I love those folks and the fun they have, but right now – their originality and outlandishness are being used to widen the gap between ignorance and the rest of us.

Wake up mainstream media. There are thousands and thousands of human lives who need you to be responsible and go the extra mile to find what is engaging and exhilarating in the news story for what it really is - the biggest civil rights movement of our time – and you have a chance to make a difference.

My tweet said, “Dear Mainstream Media, Gay & Lesbian does not = bearded man in Nun outfit. Can you please gain some social awareness?”

N. E. Francis, main stream reporter responded. And the result was her article published on Examiner.com and her creation of the FAIR IS FAIR Facebook page. It’s our duty to join forces with this idea now, go join this page.

Let’s blow it up folks, tweet it, FB it… it does only take a second after all. Let’s get this message to the mainstream and the media they are learning from.

by Jill Bennett

This, sadly, seems to be the message that every mainstream story involving lesbians seems to be sending. Granted, I haven’t seen The Kids Are Alright yet, but when I read that Julianne Moore’s character sleeps with the sperm donor of her kids I just had to sigh. Again?

And please, don’t bother with the lecture about needing to see it first. I plan to see it, and imagine I will have the same reaction as my friends who have seen it: it’s really good, except for that one little part of it. The truth is, I can still like the movie but be disappointed that it went down that particular road, as almost all of them seem to do.

And from all accounts, it’s good…really good, Oscar buzz good. According to IndieWire, it has had the best specialty debut of 2010 in the box office.

I’ve read some reviews that say that Lisa Cholodenko (a director whose work I absolutely love) handled the affair in a non-stereotypical way, that it wasn’t about a lesbian leaving her lover for a man, that the characters aren’t perfect, blah, blah, blah…but honesty, I am just so sick and tired of this sub-plot point popping up in every project that has a significant lesbian story line in it that I just don’t care. Cholodenko has stated in interviews that she isn’t here to please the lesbian audiences and doesn’t care about the fallout. Granted, we are not an easy lot to satisfy…furthermore, no filmmaker is bound to do anything but tell a good story, which she apparently did.

I guess my problem is that we just seem to reinforcing the idea that men and thus the mainstream, just cannot possibly identify or be interested in lesbian storylines unless it involves them sexually in some way. When we present this idea in media over and over again, it sends a message.

I’ve been reading lots of reviews and over and over it’s mentioned that the movie isn’t about Julianne Moore’s affair, it’s about family, it’s showing that gay couples are flawed just like everyone else etc. But given that every review mentions it, I can’t help but be that lesbian that points out that the focus is on that particular storyline. Sorry folks, but this justification stinks a little bit like “labels are for cans” and I just can’t stomach it anymore. In fact, my point is reinforced by the fact that I haven’t seen it yet, but I already know that it happens.

Ask anyone what the movie is about…

It’s about a lesbian family. Didn’t hear that answer.

It’s about a long term couple in the midst of a relationship crisis. Didn’t get this one either.

This is the answer I got five times:

It’s about a lesbian couple, one of them sleeps with the man who donated the sperm for their kids.

Ew.

Our own beloved Kathy Wolfe raved that this movie is our Brokeback Mountain…and yes, while we should be thrilled that A list actors are taking on lesbian roles, I for one would really appreciate a mainstream storyline that didn’t include one half of a long term lesbian partnership straying for a man. It happened first in Queer As Folk, then again on The L Word, and now this…the three projects with significant lesbian storylines that arguably have had the most mainstream appeal in the last decade.

I’m a 34 year woman who has been out for almost 15 years. Based on our mainstream media representation, the lesbian community experiences a mass exodus of dykes leaving their lovers for the almighty cock on a regular basis. I haven’t seen or experienced it one time. To be clear, I’m not talking about bisexual women here, I’m talking dyed in the wool lesbians. Women who identify as lesbian. I know it happens, just not nearly as much as it is represented – that’s all I’m sayin’.

The bigger issue is what it does to the minds of heterosexual men. Lesbian has become code word for waiting for the right man to show them what they’re missing. I’m sorry that I have to get political around this, but it’s just annoying. And it seems that we are no closer to mainstream inclusion when every mainstream project comes with the asterisk *must show lesbian joyfully fucking a man.

And by the way, how many gay boy movies EVER show this storyline in reverse? Hmmm…can’t seem to think of one. It really is a man’s world, isn’t it?

So, in conclusion I will say this: I hope the movie continues to be a critical and box office success. I hope Cholodenko wins awards and is rewarded with more projects – she’s a great director. I just want to see a lesbian movie review that doesn’t include the phrase “Jules, one half of a lesbian couple, is instantly taken by Paul’s cool sexy demeanor.”

Next time, I challenge Hollywood to do it without the tired stereotyped plot point. Oh wait, while I’m at it, here are three other don’t do’s for this mythical lesbian Brokeback:

1. no one dies at the end

2. no rape or child abuse scenes

3. no coming out story

I’m ready Hollywood. I know it can be done.

Cindy: Okay, so who the hell are you?
Maggie: You’re rather abrupt, aren’t you?
Cindy: And you’re rather British.
Maggie: Yes, well, it happens.
Cindy: What does?
Maggie: Being born in England.
Cindy: Ah. So where’s the writer?
Maggie: Which one?
Cindy: Noble.
Maggie: Ah. Well. It’s a bit tricky, you see.
Cindy: Wait a minute…are you…like me?
Maggie: Well, I wear trousers at as a general rule, but aside from that…yes. I think so.
Cindy: So…what you’re saying is…you have a bit of “Noble” in you?
Maggie. Indeed.
Cindy: I don’t know how I feel about that.
Maggie: Yes, it is strange. However, look at it this way, I’m only going to be around for another three weekends. You see, “Noble” is only me for four nights a week for a couple of hours a night at the theatre. “Noble” is you any time any one logs on and watches you on the web.
Cindy: Or DVD. You know, Season One is coming out soon.
Maggie: Rub it in, why don’t you.
Cindy: I will. So, what’s your deal?
Maggie: Well, I’m a character in this new play, London’s Scars, at the Odyssey theatre here in Los Angeles.
Cindy: Are you a good character? Because I’m a REALLY great character.
Maggie: Well, I think I’m pretty spectacular.
Cindy: Why do you say that?
Maggie: Because I’m a lesbian therapist.
Cindy: Oh, for cryin’ out loud.
Maggie: Yes. It’s a bit ironic, isn’t it.
Cindy: That’s not really the right word.
Maggie: Oh, look at you, getting all “Dyna” on me.
Cindy: Well…words are important.
Maggie: Indeed.
Cindy: So…do you get to use some big words in the play?
Maggie: I do. I get to say words like “transference”, “speculative”, “conjugated”, and “Winston Churchill”.
Cindy: I get to say words like “awesome”.
Maggie: To each his own.
Cindy: Or “her” own.
Maggie: Indeed.
Cindy: So…uh…want to get a drink?
Maggie: That’s sounds…intriguing.
Cindy: That’s a good word.
Maggie: I thought so.
Cindy: Huh.
Maggie: Yes.

Check it out, kids: I’m in this awesome play and I do indeed play a “lesbian therapist”. Three more weekends, and if you visit plays411.net and look up “London’s Scars”, you can use the discount code “410″ for a $10 off ticket! Come on out, those of you here in SoCal. And for the rest of you, check out the Facebook Page for London’s Scars for sexy pics!
